Emmanouil Saloustros, President of the Board of Directors ΕΟΠΕ – HeSMO and Associate Professor of Oncology at University of Thessaly, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“On the occasion of today’s World Day of People Who Have Gone Through the Experience of Cancer, it is worth reconsidering the language we use.
The English term cancer survivors has been translated into Greek as ‘cancer survivors’. But this is a rather unfortunate translation, which often refers more to a permanent traumatic experience than to life after treatment.
At ΕΟΠΕ – HeSMO we deeply believe that modern oncology is not just about survival. It is increasingly about recovery, reintegration, long-term monitoring, quality of life and the ability of people to continue living, working, creating and planning their future.
So perhaps the time has come to establish in our country a term closer to our language and culture. A term like ‘cancer recovered’ or ‘people with a history of cancer.’
Because words are not neutral. They shape perceptions and reflect the way society views people after cancer.”
