Emad Shash: A Short Conversation That Reminded Me Why We Do What We Do

Emad Shash, General Manager of the National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, and President of the Egyptian Gynaecological Oncology Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today, I paused in the middle of a busy day because I overheard a short conversation that reminded me why we do what we do.

While preparing the chemotherapy start list, Dr. Marwa Hussein, one of our brilliant clinical pharmacists, noticed something easy to miss on a crowded schedule, one of our patients, a 27-year-old woman, was about to receive her first chemotherapy session today, on her birthday.

Marwa immediately shared it with Dr. Rana Elshewy from our psychological support team, and within minutes the plan was simple and beautiful, we will not let her birthday pass like a routine appointment. So they turned an oncology day into a human day, a small birthday celebration, a warm moment, a message without words: you are not alone, and you are not a number on a list.

This is the essence of care. Not only treating disease, but protecting dignity, meaning, and hope, especially at the very start of a difficult journey.

I am proud of this team, and grateful for the hearts behind the work.

Thank you, Marwa. Thank you, Rana.
And thank you to Maram Montaser, Jakline Safwat, Lamis Hossam, and Yomna Khalil for making compassion a daily practice, not a slogan.

If you ever want a reminder of what “patient centered care” really means, it is this, seeing the whole person, and responding to what matters to them.

And it aligns with what oncology guidance keeps emphasizing, psychosocial and emotional support is not optional, it is part of quality cancer care.”
