New Hope for People Living with PBC in Europe – ELPA

European Liver Patients’ Association (ELPA) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Announcement from ELPA President Marko Korenjak

Primary Biliary Cholangitis Awareness Day is coming! On this important day, ELPA brings a powerful message of HOPE to all people across Europe living with PBC — a rare and challenging liver disease.

Together, we raise awareness, support patients, and advocate for better diagnosis, treatment, and care.

For too long, PBC patients had limited treatment options. But now, thanks to the European Commission’s decision, a promising new oral therapy has received conditional authorisation across the EU.

This breakthrough treatment has shown:

  • Improvements in key liver biomarkers
  • Relief from one of the most distressing symptoms—pruritus, or chronic itch

This is the first treatment in Europe to show both disease-related biomarker improvements AND real relief in daily life. It’s a transformational moment, offering renewed optimism and a better quality of life for patients.

Today, we celebrate not only a milestone in regulation—but also the hope, strength, and opportunity it brings to people living with PBC. Together—patients, clinicians, researchers, and policymakers—we commit to ensuring no one is left behind.

On this PBCDay and throughout PBCMonth, let’s raise awareness, support ongoing research, and keep moving forward—because every step brings us closer to a future where hope turns into healing.”
