“I’m continuing to reflect on my time at the UICC World Cancer Congress in Hong Kong and the many thoughtful conversations about how we improve cancer care around the world.
One session I particularly enjoyed was the ASCO and SIOG symposium on geriatric oncology. The discussion brought together experts in caring for older adults with cancer – but what made the session especially impactful was having a patient advocate as part of the panel.
It was an important reminder of something that can sometimes get lost when we talk about multidisciplinary care: the patient – and the people who care for and support them – are members of the team.
My ASCO Presidential theme, ‘Intentional Teams. Exceptional Care.’, is grounded in the belief that the best cancer care requires bringing together people with different expertise and perspectives around a shared purpose. That team must include the patient and their caregivers – not simply as recipients of care, but as partners in it.
Thank you to ASCO, SIOG, and UICC for creating a forum that modeled that so well.”
