Elisabetta Zanon, Chief Executive of the European Cancer Organisation, shared on LinkedIn:
“Great discussion at European Health Forum Gastein today on what Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Cancer Mission have achieved, and, importantly, what comes next.
Some key takeaways:
- Cancer’s burden remains enormous and is growing: more than 5 people are diagnosed with cancer every minute.
- EU action is making a real difference, but we need stronger national implementation and better coordination across the many cancer initiatives underway.
- Maintaining investment matters: the European Parliament report voted on Monday calls for €2.5 billion for cancer action in the next EU budget.
- Cancer and competitiveness go hand in hand. Look out for the upcoming ECO report on this important relationship.
- We must continue to prioritise screening and early detection, while ensuring patients across Europe can access clinical trials, biomarker testing and innovative therapies.
The message was clear: Europe has built real momentum on cancer. Now we need to sustain it and turn it into better outcomes for patients.
