“ILC is different, and treatment strategies should be too!
New research Renée Flaherty, Cathrin Brisken MD PhD and team has identified a distinct dependence of lobular breast cancer on the LOX/L axis for extracellular matrix remodeling. By targeting this specific biology, researchers can now disrupt, in preclinical models, lobular tumor progression in a promising way.
Key Findings:
- Targeting the peculiar lobular microenvironment: ILC cells can grow as single files and rely on a stiff, collagen-rich ‘matrix’ to survive. The drug PXS-5505 disrupts this matrix, halting tumor growth and preventing spread in preclinical models.
- PXS-5505, a novel pan-lysyl oxidase inhibitor, is already in clinical trials for other conditions with a strong safety profile. Research suggests it could be repurposed as a powerful add-on to standard Хэштег#hormone therapies.
- Standard tests often miss ILC’s slow growth. This study found that measuring changes in collagen architecture is a more sensitive way to track treatment success.
It is inspiring to see a translatable framework that moves the lobular field forward and might be a momentum that accelerates lobular-specific clinical trials so patients can benefit from therapies aligned with ILC biology.”
