Why Isn’t PET/CT Recommended for Every Patient with Cancer?
PET/CT is a valuable imaging modality in oncology; however, its use should be guided by evidence-based clinical indications rather than routine practice.
Depending on the tumor type and clinical scenario, PET/CT may be indicated for:
- Initial staging of selected malignancies.
- Response assessment in specific cancers.
- Evaluation of suspected recurrence or metastatic disease.
Routine PET/CT imaging is not recommended for every patient, as its clinical utility varies across tumor types and inappropriate use may increase healthcare costs without improving patient outcomes.
