ECO Calls for Fair Access to Financial Services for Cancer Survivors Across the EU

European Cancer Organisation shared on LinkedIn:

“A cancer diagnosis should not determine someone’s financial future.

Across Europe, cancer survivors continue to face barriers when accessing mortgages, insurance and other financial services, even years after completing treatment.

The European Cancer Organisation has contributed to the European Commission’s consultation on fair access to financial services for cancer survivors, calling for:

  • Harmonised, binding legislation to protect survivors across all EU Member States
  • A maximum five-year waiting period after active treatment, following the gold standard set by France, with shorter periods where supported by scientific evidence
  • Specific protections for people diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21, ensuring their cancer history does not become a barrier to financial independence in adulthood
  • An end to the obligation to disclose a past cancer diagnosis once the Right to Be Forgotten applies
  • Meaningful involvement of patients and survivors in the development and monitoring of national frameworks

Cancer survivorship should not come with lifelong financial discrimination.

It’s time to make the Right to Be Forgotten a reality for every cancer survivor in Europe.”
