New EU Rules Could Strengthen Financial Rights for Cancer Survivors – ECL

Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) shared on LinkedIn:

Surviving cancer should not mean a lifetime of financial penalty.

Yet across Europe, cancer survivors still face barriers when accessing mortgages and loans, or are charged higher insurance premiums sometimes years, even decades, after being declared cancer-free. A history of illness follows them into every credit application, quietly closing doors that are open to everyone else.

Several EU Member States, including France, Belgium and the Netherlands, have introduced national ‘right to be forgotten’ frameworks limiting how long a past diagnosis can count against someone seeking financial services. Important steps forward, however they differ significantly from one country to the next, leaving a survivor’s rights dependent on where they happen to live.

The revised Consumer Credit Directive (EU) 2023/2225 is an opportunity to change that: to embed fair treatment of survivors into European consumer protection and move from a patchwork of national solutions towards a common European standard.

On 30 September, MEPs Against Cancer and the Association of European Cancer Leagues are bringing together policymakers, cancer organisations, patient advocates and experts to take stock of progress, confront the gaps that remain, and chart the way forward.
