One of the European Alliance for Personalised Medicine’s latest scientific contributions this year has been published in npj Precision Oncology: “A Unified Framework for Pre-Screening and Screening Tools in Oncology Clinical Trials

Co-authored by Denis Horgan, Executive Director of EAPM, alongside an international multidisciplinary team of experts, including Arturo LoAIza-Bonilla, Umberto Malapelle, frederique penault-llorca, Dr. Hadi Mohamad Abu Rasheed, Vivek Subbiah and others, the review examines one of the most persistent challenges in cancer research: connecting eligible patients to the right clinical trials at the right time.

Despite more than 15,000 active oncology clinical trials worldwide, only a small proportion of eligible patients ultimately participate. Increasingly complex eligibility criteria, biomarker-driven study designs and fragmented clinical data continue to slow recruitment and delay access to innovative therapies.

The paper explores how digital health tools, artificial intelligence, large language models (LLMs) and hybrid clinician-AI approaches could help transform trial matching, improve efficiency, enhance representativeness and support more equitable access to clinical research.

Importantly, the authors argue that technology alone is not enough. Future success will depend on combining automated screening with clinical oversight, robust governance, high-quality data and a continued focus on patient-centred care.

As precision oncology becomes increasingly dependent on biomarkers, genomics and data-driven decision-making, improving trial identification and enrolment will be critical to accelerating innovation and ensuring that more patients can benefit from emerging therapies.”
