Drew Moghanaki, Professor, Chief of Thoracic Oncology at the Department of Radiation Oncology and Stanley Iezman and Nancy Stark Endowed Chair in Thoracic Radiation Oncology Research at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Chief Medical Officer of Respirati, shared a post on X:
“Next up is Piet Ost discussing one of the most exciting hypotheses in radiation oncology.

He covered a key question which is ‘what is the definition of OMD’. Is it defined just by the # of mets alone?
He discussed how most radoncs feel the most comfortable defining OMD as 5 or less mets. But did you know this number was literally made up by Ralph Weichselbaum who already shared it was because he has 5 fingers? This was news to me!

He then discussed the opportunity to optimize SBRT for OMD by shortening the schedule to 1 fraction. As already reported by Shankar Siva and being studied further in subsequent RCTs.

We learned about the fact that the limit to how many mets can be treated safely has yet to be defined.”
