“Last week, the Department of Medicine at UCLA hosted a Grand Rounds lecture titled ‘Lung Cancer Screening: Simpler Than You Think,’ presented by Dr. Ashley Prosper, Chief of Cardiothoracic Imaging.
The objective was simple but important: to increase primary care clinicians’ confidence in offering lung cancer screening to patients at risk.
One key message was that assumptions – about surgical eligibility or a patient’s willingness to undergo surgery – should not be barriers to screening. Today, many patients diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer can be treated effectively with non-surgical options such as SBRT or cryoablation, achieving excellent outcomes without an operation.
By increasing awareness of these non-surgical treatment pathways, we may lower barriers to screening in everyday practice and help more clinicians feel comfortable recommending this life-saving annual exam.
Early detection saves lives. Making screening feel straightforward is how we ensure more patients benefit from it.”
