Douglas Flora: Simplicity, Health, and Untangling Priorities for 2026

Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Yung Family Cancer Center at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, President-Elect of the Association of Cancer Care Centers, and Editor in Chief of AI in Precision Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The word ‘simple’ comes from the Latin ‘simplex’ meaning ‘one fold’ or ‘untangled.’

The word ‘complex’ comes from ‘complexus’, meaning ‘braided’ or ‘twisted together.’

A week with my family in Costa Rica gave me some time to settle in, read, and catch my breath after a whirlwind 2025. And honestly?

I’ve been feeling pretty twisted together lately.

It was a rough year for me health-wise.

Nothing catastrophic, but enough wake-up calls to recognize I’m no longer the young kid who could survive on four hours of sleep and say yes to everything.

My Oura ring has been sending me increasingly judgmental notifications, and it’s not wrong.

So my focus for 2026 is getting untangled.

Steve Jobs famously said, ‘Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.’

Not because those things aren’t good—but because they prevent focus on what truly matters. My wife has been suggesting this approach for a while now. This year, I’m actually going to listen.

That means protecting sleep. Taking care of this aging body. Being more deliberate about where I invest energy.

Recognizing that sustainable impact doesn’t come from burnout—it comes from clarity.

Simple doesn’t mean easy. But after a year of feeling braided and twisted in too many directions, I’m committing to the harder work of untangling.

Here’s to a more intentional 2026.”
