Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Yung Family Cancer Center at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, President-Elect of the Association of Cancer Care Centers, and Editor in Chief of AI in Precision Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The $4.4 Trillion Question: Is Your Oncology Team Ready for the AI Tools They Already Have?
Even if your organization isn’t ready to invest heavily in AI programs yet, you can absolutely be preparing for that future today – by investing meaningfully in upskilling your workforce.
I’m continually surprised by how little time many institutions spend on low-risk, high-rescue efforts, such as training teams to use generative AI tools. If your organization is a Microsoft Copilot shop, maybe skip one of those burnout seminars – and instead teach your leaders how to use the very tools that can help reduce that burnout.
McKinsey pegs the potential productivity gain from enterprise AI at $4.4 trillion, yet less than half of companies provide the structured training required to capture that value. The problem isn’t technology – it’s readiness.
What Healthcare Leaders Can Do Now:
- Lay the Foundation: Explain why training matters. People, not platforms, create value.
- Ease the Fear: Frame AI as a tool for growth, not redundancy.
- Focus Your Efforts: Choose two or three workflows where AI can make an immediate impact – such as literature review, documentation, scheduling, or trial matching.
- Create Governance and Guardrails: Communicate approved tools, privacy expectations, and regular audits.
- Make Learning Routine: Schedule training during work hours, not as an afterthought. -Measure adoption by outcomes, not licenses activated.
The Real Shift
The next frontier in oncology won’t be defined only by algorithms – it’ll be determined by the competence and confidence of the people who use them. Upskilling your workforce is the single most strategic, lowest-risk investment you can make today. It’s how we turn AI from a buzzword into better care.”
