Douglas Flora: Kudos to Innovators in the AI Oncology Space

Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Yung Family Cancer Center at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, President-Elect of the Association of Cancer Care Centers, and Editor in Chief of AI in Precision Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Kudos to Innovators in the AI Oncology Space

There’s a well-known quote, often attributed to the architect Daniel Burnham:

‘Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood.’

In the world of oncology, where the stakes are incredibly high, the sentiment holds. We can’t afford to make little plans, and it’s inspiring to see so many entrepreneurs building solutions that are anything but little.

Recently, my role in the AI oncology space has led me into conversations with numerous early-stage startups about their product design and development. There’s a palpable energy and a fierce commitment to rethinking how we approach cancer care. It’s a reminder that true innovation often starts with a small, focused team driven by a big idea. I plan to start a series of posts in the coming weeks to review some of these emerging tools and highlight the incredible work being done.

One of the companies I’ve had the pleasure of advising on product development is making significant strides in the challenging area of clinical decision support. Their approach is particularly compelling, as it’s not just about a standalone AI model; it’s about combining curated AI insights with peer-to-peer collaboration. It’s an acknowledgment that the human element you see me writing about every day on here —the shared experience of oncologists —is just as critical as the algorithmic power.

Tonight, I put their tool to the test with three particularly challenging clinical cases. I’m genuinely impressed with what they’ve built. The platform’s ability to integrate detailed (and accurate) AI insights with a collaborative workflow is a huge step forward.

Excellent work to the entire team, and a special shout-out to Jan Heybroek, Anne Rojas, and Stefan Glück. Keep building, because the work you’re doing has the potential to truly drive smarter cancer care for all of us.

Check it out for yourselves, pretty cool stuff.”
