Program Name
European Survey for Young Patients with Colorectal (Bowel) Cancer (Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer — eoCRC).
Organizer
Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE), an umbrella organisation representing over 40 national patient organisations across Europe. The survey development is led by Marianna Vitaloni and the DiCE team.
What is it?
A major European quantitative survey dedicated to understanding the care experiences, unmet needs, and disparities faced by patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer before the age of 50 (Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer / eoCRC).
The project builds directly on DiCE’s 2025 multi-country qualitative study examining the lived experiences of 47 young adults with CRC across seven European countries, which highlighted severe diagnostic delays, low awareness among healthcare professionals, and a profound psychosocial burden. To ensure all critical perspectives are addressed, the survey questionnaire was co-designed alongside an advisory board of young patients and healthcare professionals.
Objectives & Research Goals
- Generate Large-Scale Evidence: Establish one of the first comprehensive European datasets focused on young adults with CRC.
- Expose Care Barriers: Provide quantitative evidence on diagnostic delays, healthcare access barriers, and clinical communication gaps.
- Identify Support Gaps: Pinpoint unmet needs in psychosocial support, daily quality of life, and survivorship care.
- Drive Educational Impact: Inform targeted educational and awareness campaigns aimed at the general public and healthcare professionals.
