Diana Sarfati: Reflections on Advocacy, Leadership, and Decision-Making

Diana Sarfati, Public health physician, Former Director General of Health. Public, shared a post on LinkedIn:

I’ve spent my career on both sides of advocacy:

  • First as an academic in cancer and health systems, making the case for change and trying to convince decision-makers to act on it.
  • Later, as chief executive of the Cancer Control Agency and Director-General of Health, I was on the receiving end of exactly that kind of advocacy.

And a key part of the job was deciding what we actually focused on, and what we put to one side for the time being. It’s been an interesting and at times challenging journey that has given me insights into both perspectives, and had me consider what elements are important for advocacy to be successful (or not).

Most of my conversations in London come back to this key question: How do you close the gaps between the compelling case, the deliverable decision, and the improved outcome? It’s a conversation I’m now having with a range of organisations here, increasingly from the board or advisory side rather than the operational one. Always happy to compare notes with anyone wrestling with the same gap.”
