Dean Crowe, Founder and CEO of Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Childhood cancer research, really all research, depends on science, not politics.
Your voice matters now more than ever. Please read this, take one minute and click the link to reach out to your congressional offices and share this with others.
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has proposed a federal rule that could fundamentally change how federally funded childhood cancer research is reviewed and managed. These proposed changes are deeply concerning.
After more than two decades and investing nearly $50 million in promising childhood cancer research, I’ve seen firsthand that the best scientific breakthroughs happen when research is guided by rigorous peer review, collaboration and stable funding.
If finalized, this proposal could:
- Shift funding decisions from independent scientific experts to political appointees.
- Allow approved research grants to be terminated before completion.
- Make international collaboration more difficult, slowing progress against rare diseases such as childhood cancer.
- Undermine the peer-review process that has helped make The National Institutes of Health the global leader in biomedical research.
For children with cancer, every research study represents hope. Hope for a better treatment. Hope for fewer long-term side effects. Hope for more birthdays, graduations and tomorrows.
We cannot afford policies that slow scientific discovery.
If you believe childhood cancer research should continue to be guided by scientific merit, I hope you will take a few minutes to send a letter to your representatives urging the OMB to withdraw this proposal.
Every letter matters. Every voice matters. And every child fighting cancer deserves the very best science working on their behalf.
Thank you for standing with children and families.”
