Davidi Tawfiles, Global Health, University of Pennsylvania, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“With International Migrant Day tomorrow, I’m honored to share our latest in The Lancet (The Lancet Group), “Health equity and displaced people: challenges, progress, and the path forward”.
At a time of record-high displacement, with displacement almost doubling globally over the past decade, we argue that health systems cannot be weaponised to police borders.
We provide contemporary examples of restrictive approaches that show how legal status governs access to healthcare, creating climates of fear that drive care avoidance and preventable harm for undocumented migrants. In contrast, inclusive approaches improve health outcomes and strengthen societal wellbeing for migrants as well as generate economic returns for host countries.
Incredibly grateful to our team (Richard Sullivan, Fouad M. Fouad, Ophira Ginsburg, Mohamed Zughbur, Edward Christopher “Chris” Dee, MD, Billy Rosa, PhD, MBE, APRN, Mohja Marhoom, Nahla Gafer) for their insight and commitment to the health of displaced communities and to the The Lancet Group, Miriam Sabin, Joanna (ELS-CAM) Palmer, Ana Mateus for the opportunity to share our work.
