“Nine years ago, a phase one clinical trial saved my life.
The treatment that got me into remission wasn’t standard of care yet. It was research. My wife still reminds me I wouldn’t be here without it.
That experience shaped how I think about academic medicine.
We often talk about research and care as separate things. Academic medicine has the opportunity to bring those together.
If access is the most important quality measure we have, access to research belongs in that same conversation. Clinical trials and new treatments should be built more directly into how we care for patients.
That’s the bar I want Duke Health held to. Clinical research should be embedded as a standard of care.
I’m here because someone built that path for me. We owe our patients the same opportunity.”
