David Skorton, President and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In 40 years of research, I’ve never seen a threat like this. The Office of Management and Budget’s proposed rule to revise the Uniform Guidance would devastatingly change how federally funded research is reviewed, awarded, and overseen across government, including research that helps prevent diseases, extend lives, and develop new cures. If finalized as written, it would insert a political lens on top of a process that, for 80 years, has been run by scientists evaluating the work of other scientists.
Mixing scientific judgment and political oversight does not improve research. It undermines the very thing that has made American discovery the envy of the world: the freedom of scientists to follow the evidence wherever it leads. There is no question that the American research enterprise can and should be improved. But not by dismantling the scientific decision-making system that has made America succeed in the first place. My commentary in STAT.”
