Darren Haywood, Research Team Leader of Mental Health at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow of Cancer Survivorship at the University of Technology Sydney, shared a post by Trends in Cancer on LinkedIn, adding:
Pleased to see that our paper, ‘Planning for cancer: building accessible and high‑quality survivorship care for all,’ has been selected as the Feature Article in the April issue of the high-impact journal Trends in Cancer. It’s particularly encouraging to see a survivorship paper highlighted in this way.
In this paper, we argue for a shift from planning for when ‘when’ instead of ‘if’ we get cancer and for survivorship and supportive care to be prioritized globally.
We provide examples of excellent initiatives from organisations such as The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and American Cancer Society that should be leveraged, expanded, and used as exemplars.

Global cancer incidence is rising, with a projected lifetime risk of one in two in high-income countries. Earlier detection and improved treatments mean more people are living longer with and beyond cancer, making high-quality survivorship care urgently needed. In this issue, Haywood et al. calls for coordinated, multi-level prioritization of supportive cancer care worldwide and suggests a framework to deliver accessible survivorship services that enhance quality of life and reduce health system and economic burdens.
