Dario Trapani, Medical Oncologist at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO), shared a post on LinkedIn by the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM), adding:
“A sin tax is still among the WHO’s ‘Best Buys’ to mitigate cancer burden and positively impact population health. We know now that tobacco cessation is also the best choice for people who receive a cancer diagnosis, making such an intervention pivotal across the cancer control.
The commitment now is to ban ALL tobacco, including heated, e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and all other forms of smokeless tobacco – as broadly associated with an increased multi-cancer risk!
On the way toward the upcoming HLM on NCDs at the UN, such a strategic decision is key to achieving global, people-centric goals!”
Quoting AIOM’s post:
“The strategies adopted in recent years to reduce smoking, such as the inclusion of images with a strong emotional impact on packages, have produced little in terms of an actual drop in consumption.
The proposal we are carrying out together with Fondazione AIOM, Umberto Veronesi ETS Foundation, AIRC – Foundation for Cancer Research NGO, and Mario Negri Institute, on the other hand, could lead to results that were unthinkable until now.”
