Danielle Laperche, Clinical Oncologist at Oncoclínicas&Co and Director of Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology – SBOC, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with Breast Cancer Research and Treatment:
“Recent post!
Our multicenter study on the quality of life of Brazilian women with HR+ early breast cancer has just been published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. I am very proud to be the author of this work, developed with the contribution of 14 centers in the country, including 774 patients using adjuvant hormone therapy.
We investigated the impact of the type of health coverage – public (SUS) vs. private – on the quality of life of this population.
Women treated in public institutions presented:
- worse pain scores
- More symptoms in the breast and arm
- More nausea and vomiting
- greater financial impact of treatment
Younger age (< 60 years), presence of comorbidities, and ovarian suppression associated with hormone therapy were key factors associated with poorer quality of life.
These results reinforce important inequalities in cancer care in Brazil and point to avenues for policies that prioritize equity and comprehensive support for patients undergoing treatment.”
