Daniel O’Day: A Milestone Moment in HIV Prevention

Daniel O’Day, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Gilead Sciences, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Last Friday was a historic day in South Africa – and a milestone moment for all of us at Gilead Sciences. The country held a national launch of our twice-yearly HIV prevention, with President Ramaphosa noting: “This is more than the launch of a new medicine, this is a turning point in our country’s history….it is a new chapter in South Africa’s fight against HIV”.

Gilead scientists worked for 17 years on this breakthrough innovation. What kept them going was the thought that one day, their work would make a difference in countries with the highest incidence of HIV. That day arrived in South Africa on Friday. The first injection of the medicine was given to a young woman in a clinic in Mpumalanga province.

Thousands of people turned out to the launch ceremony, which was broadcast live around the country. The crowds sang and cheered as the President spoke about this being a turning point in the fight against HIV. It was a moment that embodied the intersection of science and hope, and a profound reminder of why our work matters.”
