Cynthia Chmielewski: What “Cure” Will Mean in Myeloma

Cynthia Chmielewski, Patient Advocate of Myeloma Steering Committee at National Cancer Institute (NCI), shared a post on LinkedIn:

The International Myeloma Society (IMS) — a global professional organization dedicated to advancing research, education, and clinical care in multiple myeloma — met this past Friday and Saturday with one extraordinary goal: to define what “cure” will mean in myeloma.

After thoughtful discussion and expert consensus, they agreed upon a formal definition.

Let that sink in.

For those of us in the myeloma community, this is monumental. When I was diagnosed in 2008, “cure” was a four-letter word that was never spoken. It wasn’t part of the conversation. It wasn’t part of the expectations.

Today, not only is the word being spoken — it is being defined.

This marks a powerful shift in mindset, research focus, and possibility for patients everywhere.
Thank you to the entire myeloma community — the researchers who pushed the science forward, the clinicians who translated discovery into care, the organizations that funded lifesaving trials, and most importantly, the patients who enrolled in clinical trials and never gave up.

Because of you, we are no longer just treating myeloma.

We are defining cure.”
