“A glimpse of the future of cancer treatment
Last weekend, the world’s cancer scientists gathered in Madrid to share some of their latest findings at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) annual conference. These included:
- Personalised cancer vaccines can lower the risk of melanoma coming back
- Precise radiotherapy can help control some lung cancers after they start spreading
- New treatment combinations could give people with bladder cancer an alternative to chemotherapy alongside surgery
- And biologically-guided drugs are beginning to slow down some hard-to-treat cancers, like womb and stomach cancer, while minimising side effects.
These are all encouraging signs that new treatments could help people with cancer live longer, better lives, but the research isn’t over yet. Next, scientists and regulators will need to make sure these options are safe and effective enough for standard care.
