Eric Small’s ASCO26 Plenary Speech on Global Cancer Care Gaps – Common Sense Oncology

“Scientific innovations in the cancer care space are to be celebrated for the amazing possibilities they can provide. However, these advances can sometimes seem to exist in a separate world from the lives of the very people who are treated by them, their families and communities.

This year, ASCO was opened by an extraordinary plenary speech by Dr. Eric Small. In it, he highlighted gaps in the translation of healthcare innovations. Large gaps exist: in global and regional cancer care equity, in compassionate and accessible communications to patients from medical experts, and access to affordable and effective treatments.

People with lived cancer experience deserve outcomes that matter. As Dr. Small said:

Every cancer. Every patient. Everywhere. While advances should be implemented, health care systems should also prioritize treatments that deliver meaningful benefits to patients.

Let’s drive human-centred progress in oncology together.”
