From Diagnosis to Completing Chemotherapy: A Stage III Colon Cancer Patient’s Story – Colorectal Cancer Alliance

Colorectal Cancer Alliance, shared on X:

“In November of 2025, I went to my primary care physician because I was having nearly constant stomach pain and blood in my stool. I was given a take-home stool test and a referral to the GI who visits our small town a few times a month.

I was originally given an appointment about four months away, but within a week, an appointment opened up. I was swiftly scheduled for a colonoscopy and assured that it shouldn’t be anything serious like cancer causing my symptoms.

Shortly after I regained consciousness from the colonoscopy, the doctor came in and said, ‘We actually think we found cancer.’

By my birthday in February, it was confirmed that I had adenocarcinoma, and I was scheduled for surgery to remove the part of my colon where the tumor was.

It was stage III.

I recovered from surgery, got my port placed for chemotherapy, and then our dog became sick with pneumonia. The day before I started chemotherapy, the vet called and told us treatments had stopped working and our dog was suffering. We had to put him down.

I started chemo the next day, wishing our little buddy was there to hang out with me on the couch as I got pumped full of drugs.

I just finished 12 rounds of 5-FU and 10 rounds of oxaliplatin in September.

Early in my treatments, I had to keep a list of ‘things to look forward to after treatment’ to keep my spirits up. We got to start crossing things off the list a couple of weeks ago, and it’s been amazing.”
