Christos Tsagkaris, Orthopedic Surgery Resident at Solothurner Hospitals AG – soH, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“What is worse than one crisis? Multiple crises. But what is better than an award to one person? Recognition of a community working across countries, disciplines, and sectors to better understand and address such poly-crises.
I was delighted to learn that the scientific committee of the Beyond Sciences Initiative (BSI) awarded a Top Hot Doc distinction to our presentation on the origins and work of The Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC). The story spans from the struggles of cancer patients in Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020 to the 1st War and Cancer Global Summit and the Manifesto for improving cancer care for conflict-affected populations, co-signed by the World Health Organization Director-General in 2024.
I was equally honoured to be included among this year’s BSI Impact Award recipients, recognising the efforts of a remarkable group of young professionals who helped deliver a high-level international conference bringing together keynote lectures, scientific presentations, and career development opportunities across the biomedical sciences.
One of the most memorable moments behind this year’s career day and distinction was the opportunity to exchange views and lived experience with mentors and colleagues including Christos Lionis, Marina Haque, Evangelia Markopoulou and Mahmoud Bassiony on the growing role of students and young professionals in scientific publishing, the debates this raises, and the opportunities it creates.
These distinctions – and the words and deeds behind them – belong to the many colleagues, mentors, advocates, patients, and partners who continue to demonstrate that science can be a bridge between disciplines, countries, and communities facing adversity”
