Christos Tsagkaris, Orthopedic Surgery Resident at Solothurner Hospitals AG – soH, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The conversation on cancer preparedness began in Georgia and continued in Brussels at the European Cancer Summit 2025. I attended the Summit together with fellow EU Cancer Mission Board colleagues Prof. Christine Chomienne, Prof. Nevenka Maher and Ms. Penilla Gunther.
The event brought together more than 400 participants across the cancer ecosystem, with discussions ranging from research policy and Mission-driven innovation, to the intersection of cancer, AMR and armed conflict, to disparities in rural cancer care and the need to build capacity for an ageing population.
As mentioned in an interview with Dr Yeva Margaryan of OncoDaily and CancerWorld, the Summit is not just a recap of 2024–2025, but a moment to prepare for what lies ahead: challenges coming from within healthcare (personnel shortages, other diseases, AMR) and outside healthcare — climate change, conflict, and financial insecurity for patients, caregivers as well as healthcare systems.
This constellation stresses the need for strategic vision, forward thinking, preparedness, and collaboration more than ever. I’m grateful for the strong spirit of cooperation in Europe, and notably within the hellenic cancer prevention and control sphere. Conversations with George Kapetanakis, Marina Ximeri (Hellenic Cancer Federation | ELLOK), and Prof. Andreas Charalambous (Cyprus University of Technology) made this clear.
It was also wonderful to reconnect with friends and colleagues — Prof. Rui Medeiros, reflecting on Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto (IPO-Porto) 2024; Dr Amil Družić, fellow CancerCode ambassador advancing HPV prevention and responsible AI in oncology; Prof. Matti Aapro and his insightful talk on cancer emergencies and crises (incl. AMR), Hugo R. Soares, Eduardo Pisani, Johanna Ehrenstein, Juliana de Sá, Carolina Santos and many others.
A special highlight was reconnecting with Eleonora Varntoumian almost four years after the European Health Parliament, as well as Cristina Arnés Sanz, Inês Costa Louro, and Malamati Voulgaridou, remembering our shared endeavors across cancer, alcohol policy, and climate-health initiatives.
Thank you to the European Cancer Organisation for another powerful edition of the Summit and the European Commission for enabling us to attend.
Keep an eye on the forthcoming Hellenic Cancer Federation | ELLOK conference in February 2026, close to the World Cancer Day 2026!”
