Christos Tsagkaris on Integrating Musculoskeletal Health into Cancer Care

Christos Tsagkaris, Orthopedic Surgery Resident at Solothurner Hospitals AG – soH, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“At a cancer forum not long ago, someone asked me: ‘But why are you here if you work in orthopedics?’ That question fueled a reflection I’ve shared in a recent invited editorial for CancerWorld, an outlet read and written by professionals and patients across Europe and beyond.

The article explores how musculoskeletal health professionals – orthopaedic surgeons, physiatrists, physiotherapists – can contribute more actively to cancer prevention, survivorship, and rehabilitation at a time when cancer diagnoses keep increasing and diverse crises challenge the continuum of cancer care.

This question has first been addressed through the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC), an evidence-based primary prevention tool supported by the IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization and the European Commission.

The publication of this piece coincides with the launch of the 5th Edition of the ECAC in ESMO2025 – an updated edition delivered by experts that highlight the importance of making exercise accessible to all, including vulnerable groups, and recognizes the co-benefits of physical activity for preventing other noncommunicable diseases as well.

Having served as a youth ambassador to the ECAC to 2018 and later on having become aware of musculoskeletal challenges that cancer patients experience in clinical settings – from pathological fractures and muscle loss to living with amputations – helped me reflect on potential ways to scale the competences and services of musculoskeletal healthcare services across efforts to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and leverage prevention among the general population.

Certainly, there is a lot more to learn, consider, and implement collectively, and I hope that this discussion can be continued and enriched.

Grateful to the CancerWorld team for the opportunity, and to the many colleagues and patients who continue to inspire this dialogue.

You can read the full piece and together with many interesting articles here.”
