Christopher Jackson: Why the Role of Experts in Public Policy Matters More Than Ever
Christopher Jackson, Co-lead of the Cancer National Clinical Network at Health New Zealand, Te Whatu Ora, and Professor of Oncology at the University of Otago, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“There seems to be a collective crisis of confidence in the role of experts in public decision making – anyone with an internet connection and a social media platform has as much of a say in public discourse as those who have dedicated their lives to study in an area.
However, there are so many instances where we just can’t afford to get it wrong in the role of the scientist and expert in modern public policy remains more important than ever.
As part of NZSO’s annual meeting this year, we’re hosting a public plenary on the role of the (actual) expert in informing policy.
We’re delighted to have Prof Ashani Weeraratna – one of Biden’s science advisors – here to talk about what is happening in the US, and also Hon, Grant Robertson to share reflections on how experts can and do engage in the domestic policy area.
This is going to be one amazing session.
Because it’s so important, we wanted to invite the public to be part of the discussion.
Come along!”
Annie Wong, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Clinician Researcher at Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre, shared this post, adding:
“Really looking forward to this public lecture, Chris! What a way to kick off a fantastic 2025 NZ Society of Oncology program!”
