Christopher Crancer: Speaking at the ACR and RBMA Members Practice Leaders Forum with Amy K. Patel

Christopher Crancer, SVP of Public Policy and Physician Partnerships and ED of the RAYUS Quality Institute at RAYUS Radiology, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This weekend I had the opportunity to speak at the American College of Radiology and RBMA Members Practice Leaders Forum alongside Amy K. Patel,  whose leadership in this work I deeply respect, on the intersection of public policy and radiology and what it means for patients and practices.

It reminded me of the last time Dr. Patel and I shared a stage a few years ago in Chicago. At that point, only a small handful of states had passed legislation ensuring women had access to diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging following a screening at no cost. What we were seeing was sobering. Nearly 20% of women were not returning for diagnostic breast imaging, largely because of cost. For all the attention paid to surprise medical bills, learning that the word ‘diagnostic’ meant an unexpected and meaningful out-of-pocket expense was very much a surprise to patients.

When Dr. Patel and I shared the stage again this weekend, more than thirty red and blue states across the country had passed legislation closing that coverage gap, and federal policymakers are increasingly looking to mirror those efforts.

Party did not matter. Practice type did not matter. And no patient is going to remember a bill number when cancer is detected at stage one instead of stage three or four. What they will remember is more time with the people they love.

That progress only happened because physicians, practices, professional societies, and advocacy organizations worked together under a big tent to grow the pie rather than fight over a shrinking slice. The issues we face in healthcare are serious, but we have a playbook, and with engagement, a team that can deliver meaningful wins for patients, practices, and physicians.”

Amy K. Patell, Medical Director of The Breast Care Center at Liberty Hospital and Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, shared Christopher Crancere’s post, adding:

“Well said! It was an honor joining forces with you, Christopher Crancer!
