Christopher Clinton Conway: The Story Behind a Terrier’s Place in Art History

Christopher Clinton Conway, Chief Philanthropy Officer and Executive Vice President for Strategic Communications, Indiana Biosciences Research Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Dandie Dinmont’s Devoted Donor Directive

In 1919, James Cowan Smith left £55,000 to the National Gallery Scotland, an extraordinary gift for its time worth approximately $5 million in 2026 dollars, with one very specific condition, the portrait of his beloved Dandie Dinmont terrier Callum must remain on permanent display.

That single directive did not just preserve a tribute to a cherished companion it helped fund the future acquisition of masterpieces like Constable’s Dedham Vale, Sargent’s Lady Agnew, and Goya’s El Medico.”
