Chinburen Jigjidsuren, Member of the State Great Khural (Parliament) of Mongolia, Former Minister of Health of Mongolia, shared on Facebook:
“Amendment to the Law Protecting Children’s Health Has Finally Been Approved!
Today, at the plenary session of the State Great Khural (Parliament), the law on amendments to the Law on Tobacco Control was finalized.
Starting from May 2025, my team and I led the working group of the draft law, and through extensive discussions, research, and consultations, we successfully approved this legal reform.
It is not just about limiting tobacco use.
It is a policy decision to protect children and young people from nicotine addiction, reduce tobacco-related diseases and premature deaths, and protect the health of future generations.
Key contents of the law amendment:
- Electronic, heated, and new types of tobacco products are now fully regulated by law.
- Requirements and controls on the sale, advertising, and distribution of tobacco products have been significantly tightened.
- Health warnings on tobacco packaging and containers are mandated to cover at least 70 percent of the surface.
- Provisions for the phased increase of special excise taxes on tobacco products have been included.
- Health care services providing counseling, treatment, and psychological support for individuals wishing to quit smoking have been legally established.
- The legal basis for the digitalization of manufacturing, import, trade registration, and control of tobacco products has been created.
As a doctor, I know very well the illnesses, suffering, and harm caused by tobacco to human life. Therefore, passing this law amendment was a matter of special personal significance to me.
I am deeply confident that the law approved today will prevent many children from nicotine addiction and contribute to protecting numerous families from the sorrow of disease.
I would like to express my gratitude to all members of the working group, scientists, researchers, medical professionals, and members of the State Great Khural who worked and cooperated at all stages of drafting, discussing, and approving the law.
