Children’s Cancer Institute Welcomes the Commonwealth’s Draft National Health and Medical Research Strategy

“Children’s Cancer Institute welcomes the Commonwealth’s Draft National Health and Medical Research Strategy and its bold vision for a stronger, more connected research ecosystem. The draft rightly highlights workforce, funding, data, and infrastructure as key enablers, underpinned by ambitions to drive national prosperity and security, lead the world in health outcomes, deliver equity so no one is left behind, secure a resilient and sustainable health system, and strengthen regional and global partnerships.

However, to truly deliver on its promise, the Strategy must address the structural barriers holding Australian research back, including unfunded indirect costs, insecure career pathways, fragmented funding, and persistent inequities in rare diseases. Without stronger measures and clear commitments, Australia risks missing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to unlock the full health, economic, and social benefits of medical research and accelerate progress towards curing childhood cancer.

You can read our full submission in response to the draft Strategy below.”
