Every type of pediatric cancer is rare compared to adult cancers. Moreover, 55% of gene mutations that drive pediatric cancer are not found in adult cancers.
As we move from an era of treating cancer with broadly toxic chemotherapy towards an era of more targeted therapies, it will no longer be the case that new therapies can ‘trickle down’ from adult trials to children because most of the childhood cancer mutations are different. Therefore, dedicated efforts are needed to identify actionable therapeutic targets in the genomes and epigenomes of pediatric cancers.
