“AORTIC President Calls for Greater Cooperation, Research, and Data to Combat Cancer in Africa
From 11 to 17 October 2026, meetings of the African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN) and the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) were held in Arusha, Tanzania, focusing on knowledge sharing and strengthening cancer registries.
During the meetings, cancer registry results from Mozambique covering the period from 2005 to 2025 were presented, alongside the perspective of Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP) on the development of these systems. The CEROPAL initiative was also discussed, with the aim of strengthening cooperation among Portuguese-speaking countries in cancer research and surveillance.
Meetings with representatives of AFCRN, IACR and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) provided opportunities to explore areas of collaboration and strengthen strategic partnerships.
In her capacity as AORTIC President for the 2025–2027 term, Prof. Cesaltina Ferreira Lorenzoni reaffirmed the Organisation’s commitment to research, training and strengthening cancer registries across Africa, promoting policies and interventions based on scientific evidence.
Strengthening cancer registries means advancing research, informing public policies and transforming cancer control in Africa.”
