Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: Cervical Cancer Can Be the First Cancer to Be Eliminated

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, shared a post on X:

“Cervical cancer can be the first cancer to be eliminated – we have the tools.

That’s why, in 2018, I issued a global call for action to eliminate cervical cancer, which was followed in 2020 by a Global Strategy with the 90-70-90 targets:

  • 90 percent of girls vaccinated;
  • 70 percent of women screened;
  • And 90% of women with pre-cancerous lesions treated, all by 2030.

Today, 162 countries provide HPV vaccines as part of their national schedules protecting 65% of girls globally. With more countries to include these vaccines, we expect this proportion to rise to 80% in the coming months.”
