Celia Diez de los Rios: Let’s Be Excellent Professionals and Also Delightfully Human

Celia Diez de los Rios, Lecturer at the University of Navarra, Spain, Board Member at From Testing to Targeted Treatments (FT3), Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Happy 2026!

As we begin this year, I found myself drawn to something different. An article in Science about how embracing one’s silly side can actually make us better scientists.

First I was not convinced but spoke of embracing being silly. Not frivolous, not unprofessional, but human.

In a world where we often feel we must be serious all the time to be taken seriously, this felt like permission to breathe.

So I want to propose a little new year proposal for 2026 for anyone reading (nurse, researcher, educator, HCPs or anyone reading):

Let’s be excellent professionals… and also delightfully human.

I’m not sure I will embrace my silly side but yes a bit of humour and thinking outside the box

Let’s laugh with colleagues (and at ourselves) when we stumble, because mistakes are part of discovery.

Let’s model for students that being professional and human are allies not opposites.

This year, let’s take our work seriously… but not ourselves too seriously.

I have the luck of being surrounded by very nice colleagues on each of my roles that make things much easier to laugh and smile.

So, whenever possible, surround yourself by nice people and be sure to be a nice person people would like to work with.”
