“Excited to share that our latest review is now published in Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology!
‘Toward Liquid Biopsy-Based Profiling of Antitumor Immunity’
co-authored with Klaus Pantel and Doryan Masmoudi.
Despite the tremendous success of immunotherapy, one fundamental question remains:
- How can we continuously monitor the evolving dialogue between tumors and the immune system without repeated tissue biopsies?
- Tissue biopsy remains the gold standard – but it captures only a single moment in a highly dynamic disease. Repeated biopsies are invasive, often impractical, and rarely performed in routine clinical care.
- This is where liquid biopsy could change the game.
In our review, we discuss how blood-based biomarkers – including ctDNA, CTCs, EVs, plasma proteins, platelets, and circulating immune cells – can provide complementary insights into:
- Tumor burden and clonal evolution
- Immune activation and mechanisms of immune escape
- Early response – or emerging resistance – to immunotherapy, often before radiological progression becomes apparent
Importantly, integrating these biomarkers with multi-omics technologies and AI-driven analytics could enable real-time, minimally invasive monitoring of tumor–immune interactions throughout the patient’s treatment journey.
We believe this shift – from static tissue snapshots to dynamic, blood-based immune profiling – has the potential to redefine precision immuno-oncology.
