Caroline Chukwu: National Oncology Debate Advances Cancer Awareness Among Nigerian Youth

Caroline Chukwu, Founder and Executive Director of Acetrea Cancer Advocacy Network, Oncology Nurse at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital – RSUTH, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“One of the most sustainable ways to fight cancer is to educate the next generation.

That is why i am particularly excited about the National Secondary School Debate on Oncology, a featured academic event of the 2nd National Oncology Nursing Society of Nigeria (ONS- Nigeria)Conference 2026.

Through this initiative, ONSN is extending cancer education beyond healthcare settings and into our schools, empowering young people to engage in meaningful conversations about cancer prevention, treatment, and public health.

By creating a platform for secondary school students to debate critical oncology related issues, we are helping to develop future leaders, critical thinkers, advocates, and informed citizens who can influence healthier communities.

What inspires me most is that Oncology Nursing Society of Nigeria (ONS- Nigeria) continues to demonstrate that professional societies can give back in tangible ways not only through knowledge sharing, but through mentorship, youth development, advocacy, empowerment, and opportunities that shape lives.

The winning school will receive a ₦300,000 cash prize, while participating students will gain exposure, recognition, networking opportunities, and the privilege of engaging with professionals from across Nigeria and beyond.

This is more than a competition.

It is an investment in awareness. It is an investment in leadership. It is an investment in the future of cancer control in Nigeria.

I commend the Oncology Nursing Society of Nigeria (ONS- Nigeria) for championing initiatives that create lasting impact and inspire the next generation to become part of the solution.

Schools are encouraged to participate.

Healthcare professionals, educators, researchers, students, policymakers, and advocates are also invited to register for the 2nd National Oncology Nursing Society of Nigeria (ONS- Nigeria)Conference 2026 as we come together to advance cancer care, education, research, and advocacy in Nigeria.

Together, we can educate today for a cancer free tomorrow.
