Caroline Chukwu: Nursing is a Calling That Touches Lives in Moments of Pain

Caroline Chukwu, Founder and Executive Director of Acetrea Cancer Advocacy Network, Oncology Nurse at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital – RSUTH, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Today, we celebrate the heart of healthcare – Nurses.

Happy International Nurses Day to every nurse across the world who continues to serve with courage, compassion, resilience, and excellence.

Nursing is more than a profession; it is a calling that touches lives in moments of pain, uncertainty, healing, and hope. Every day, nurses stand at the frontline of care advocating for patients, comforting families, making critical decisions, educating communities, and strengthening healthcare systems globally.

As a nurse, I have come to understand that our impact goes far beyond administering medications or carrying out procedures. We become voices for the vulnerable, strength for the weak, and hope for those fighting life’s hardest battles.

Today is also a reminder of the enduring legacy of Florence Nightingale (the lady with the lamb), whose vision transformed nursing into a respected and essential pillar of healthcare. Her dedication continues to inspire generations of nurses to lead with competence, compassion, and humanity.

To every nurse working in hospitals, clinics, communities, oncology units, emergency rooms, neonatal care, operating theatres, palliative care, and beyond, thank you for all you do, often unseen and uncelebrated. May we continue to rise as leaders, innovators, educators, researchers, and advocates for better healthcare outcomes worldwide.

Happy International Nurses Day!

The world is better because nurses exist.
