Carmen Monge-Montero: Sweet Roots – Baking to Support Cancer Survivors in Kenya

Carmen Monge-Montero, Researcher and Global Cancer Advocate, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Dear Network Thanks for giving.

On Thanksgiving we normally share with others, and for me it is the perfect moment to reflect on gratitude, purpose, and community and now you can share and learn a delicious pastry.

Last year, during my time in Kenya with A Fresh Chapter, we visited Kibera, one of the largest informal settlements in Africa. It’s home to an estimated 1 million people, with limited access to water, sanitation, healthcare, and emotional support. Cancer is difficult, but it is even harder when you don’t have access to basic resources, and mental health becomes an even greater challenge.

That’s why the Mizizi Program matters so much. Instead of waiting for people to reach hospitals, many cannot, Mizizi goes directly into communities all around Kenya, especially the most vulnerable ones. I was lucky to see how a Mizizi workshop with more than 80 participants in Kibera was changing people’s mind about a life after cancer, giving them simple, accessible tools for emotional healing that they can use daily and share with others. The participants were mostly cancer patients and survivors, but also many caregivers who wanted to learn how to support their relatives.

Sadly, this year the Mizizi project suffered some budget cuts, and that is why, to support this work, I created Sweet Roots, a Dawa-inspired lemon tart born from my own healing process through pastry and from the community I met in Kenya.

On December 20th, I’ll be hosting an online baking class where we’ll make it together, and where every contribution helps keep Mizizi alive.

Instead of spending your money on something disposable, spend it on emotional support for a cancer survivor in Kenya.

Every 15 USD = emotional support for one cancer survivor.

This season, I’m incredibly grateful for community, healing, and the chance to turn food into impact.

Let’s bake for something meaningful — and bigger.”
