Ina Khachatryan: New Case Report on Targeted Therapy in Pediatric Invasive Candidiasis

Ina Khachatryan, Assistant Managing Editor at OncoDaily Medical Journal, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“New Case Report in OncoDaily Medical Journal by Walaa Ahmed Abdo Yahya et al.

This case features an 8-year-old boy who developed a rapidly enlarging fungating facial mass and keratomycosis, later confirmed to be invasive cutaneous and ocular candidiasis caused by Candida albicans. The presentation initially resembled malignancy or atypical infections, but the patient improved significantly once voriconazole was started based on culture results.

Because of the unusual severity and progression, further immunologic testing was performed and revealed DOCK8 deficiency, explaining the patient’s recurrent infections.

This report highlights the importance of early recognition, thorough diagnostic workup, and considering underlying primary immunodeficiencies in children with atypical fungal disease, along with the value of targeted therapy and coordinated multidisciplinary care.
