Giuseppe Lombardi: Cancer Numbers in Italy 2025 – CNS Tumors

Giuseppe Lombardi, Head of the Neuro-Oncology Unit at Veneto Oncology Institute IOV – IRCCS, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Cancer numbers in Italy 2025

  • Central Nervous System Tumors

The new edition of Cancer Numbers in Italy 2025 has recently been published, created with the support of AIOM | Italian Association of Medical Oncology and AIRTUM, a fundamental reference document for understanding oncological epidemiology in our country.

Among the chapters addressed, particular attention is paid to tumors of the central nervous system (CNS): relatively rare neoplasms but with a high clinical impact, with over 6,000 new diagnoses every year in Italy and a prognosis that still remains challenging, especially in malignant forms of adults such as glioblastoma.

The impossibility of screening programs and biological complexity make these cancers particularly difficult to treat. However, advances in molecular classification, the introduction of targeted therapies, and access to clinical trials are progressively changing the therapeutic scenario for selected subgroups of patients.

In this context, the availability of robust epidemiological data, the centralization of care, and the strengthening of neuro-oncology networks are essential elements to improve care and clinical outcomes.”
