Cancer Institute NSW shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When Maryam Zahid’s mum was diagnosed with cancer, Maryam became her carer. It took time to adjust. Suddenly, there were so many appointments and medications to organise and explain to her mum.
Today, Maryam is determined to help other carers of people from refugee backgrounds in NSW. Recently, she has joined the Institute’s Caring for Carers of Refugees with Cancer project as a consumer voice.
Maryam is contributing to the implementation of a new model of care tailored to support carers from refugee backgrounds. The new model of care will reduce barriers and provide holistic care that is culturally responsive and language-specific.
Besides bringing her own lived experience as a carer, Maryam also consults closely with the Afghan community through her not-for-profit afghan women on the move to identify areas that can be improved.

The Caring for Carers of Refugees with Cancer project is proudly funded by the NSW Government through the Refugee Health Flexible Fund (2026 to 2029). The Cancer Institute NSW leads the project in collaboration with the NSW Health Care Interpreting Service, Transcultural Mental Health Centre, NSW Refugee Health Service, and the Australian Government-funded Carer Gateway program, delivered by The Benevolent Society.”
