Voice of the Families’ Post No 56: Brian and His Mother – CANCaRe Africa

“Voice of the families’ post N56 Brian and his mother.

13 Year old Brian comes from Kamwenge district in Uganda (approximately 116 km from Mbarara). When he got sick, he was taken to a district hospital and later transferred and admitted to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital where he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and promptly started on treatment.

‘We were worried about the diagnosis, when we saw other children, even younger than him, being treated for different cancers and improving, we felt somewhat relieved. The medical team explained to us that the disease is curable if we finish treatment and we were also supported financially by Zero Abandonment Study. All that gave us relief’, said the mother.

Brian is a 1st born of 3. He likes studying and often asks when he is to go back and also likes praying to God to cure him in his free time. His father, who was a taxi driver, stopped working following Brian’s illness to take care of him, while his mother remains at home caring for the other children. The family are also farmers, they have a small piece of land that they grow food for consumption.

Appropriate consent given.”
