CANCaRe Africa Shares a Life-Changing Story: 3-year-old Kakuru Beats Childhood Cancer
CANCaRe Africa shared a post in LinkedIn:
”Voice of the families, Post #42 Kakuru and his mother
Kakuru is a 3-year-old boy from Kyenjonjo, over 200 km from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in Western Uganda.
His mother recalls:
“My child developed abdominal swelling and weight loss. I thought it was ‘Ekibale’ (splenomegaly) and took him to the hospital. After a scan, I even tried a herbalist, but there was no improvement. We returned to the District Hospital, and they referred us to Mbarara. There, I was told my child had cancer.”
Kakuru was diagnosed with Wilms tumor. He received chemotherapy, underwent surgery, completed radiotherapy, and is now cancer-free.
Stories like Kakuru’s show how access to timely diagnosis and treatment can transform childhood cancer outcomes in Africa.
